Artist statement

“I paint the San Antonio I grew up in: the colors of the West Side, the geometry of the barrio, the music in the garage. My father taught art his whole life, and my great uncle ran a gallery out of a nightclub on St. Mary's Street. I carry both of them into every canvas. I paint sober, I paint grateful, and I paint so the people and places that raised me stay visible.”

The place

San Antonio

The river and the heat, the West Side rooflines, conjunto through an open window — this is the city that raised Karl and colors everything he paints.
